The city of Montreal has several visual signatures such as taxis lanterns, the new bus shelters and Bixis. Each element contributes to the eclectic image of the city, seeking contemporary efficiency, while trying to keep its traditions. The carriages of Montreal are part of that heritage, an experience that has essentially become a tourist attraction. As the city is trying to reinforce its eclectic image, it is essential to ask where or how do the horse carriages fit?

In this project we have looked at: What is the tradition? What is the horse carriage experience now? What will be the role of the carriages in the future? It was a research based upon the lifestyle of the horses, then and now, whose functions have altered throughout the years. Therefore it is essential to look at carriages not only as means of transportation but also as an opportunity for a service.

The result is a horseless electric powered carriage. C2017 is meant to promote an alternative touristic mode of transportation, a cleaner and animal friendly approach, showcasing the city’s initiative to promote technology. Tradition is then transcended with the coachman and their knowledge of the Old Montréal.

La ville de Montréal possède plusieurs signatures visuelles telles que les lanternons de taxis, les nouveaux abris bus et les Bixis. Chaque élément contribue à l’image éclectique de la ville, qui recherche l’utilité contemporaine tout en essayant de garder ses traditions. Les calèches de Montréal font partie de ce patrimoine, une expérience devenue essentiellement touristique permettant de découvrir le vieux quartier sous un nouvel œil. Étant donné que la ville fait des efforts pour renforcer son image moderne tout en respectant les traditions, il est intéressant d’essayer d’intégrer les calèches à celle-ci.

Nous avons étudié l’évolution de l’objet : quelle était la tradition? Quelle est l’expérience de la calèche actuellement? Et quelle sera la place d’une calèche dans le futur ? Notre recherche s’est basée sur le mode de vie des chevaux, dont la fonction à changer à travers les années. Il devient alors essentiel de regarder les calèches non seulement comme un objet de transport mais aussi comme une opportunité de service (ex. Les Bixis.)

Le résultat est une calèche électrique sans cheval. C2017 promeut un mode alternatif de transport, une approche plus verte et respectueuse envers les animaux, montrant les initiatives technologiques de la ville. Les traditions sont alors gardées par les cochers et leurs savoirs du Vieux-Montréal.
